Meta Separates Chat Functionality Between Instagram and Messenger
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has decided to separate the chat functionality between Messenger and Instagram after enabling cross-platform messaging between the two apps in 2020. Previously, the chat functions in Messenger and Instagram were separate, but they were merged to allow for cross-app chat. However, Meta has now reverted this integration and will discontinue support for cross-app chat in mid-December 2023. Users will no longer be able to initiate new conversations or calls with Facebook accounts from Instagram, and existing conversations will only be readable without the ability to send new messages. Additionally, Facebook accounts will no longer see the active status or read receipts of Instagram users, and conversations with Facebook accounts will not be moved to the Facebook or Messenger inboxes. The reasons behind this decision are not explicitly stated by Meta, but it is speculated that it may be related to the European Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations, which require companies like Meta to offer interoperability or integration with third-party platforms for messaging services.
