Google Doodle Celebrates Pinisi, Traditional Indonesian Ship Recognized by UNESCO
Today's Google Doodle celebrates the Pinisi, a traditional Indonesian ship from Sulawesi Selatan. The Pinisi was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO on December 7, 2017. The doodle features an image of the Pinisi in gold, representing the second "O" in Google. This traditional Bugis vessel, made of various types of wood, has been used for inter-island transportation since the 1500s. Its unique design includes two main masts and seven sails. The origin of the name "Pinisi" is uncertain, with two theories suggesting influences from the Italian city of Venice and the practice of sealing the ship's joints to prevent water ingress. Over the years, the Pinisi has become a symbol of maritime strength and is now popular for fishing trips and tourism expeditions.
