AMD Introduces Ryzen 8040 Processors for AI Workloads on Laptops
AMD has unveiled its new line of laptop processors called Ryzen 8040, designed to handle local AI generative programs. Based on the Zen 4 architecture like its predecessor Ryzen 7040, the "Hawk Point" series promises faster AI processing performance with its embedded XDNA NPU. These processors offer a 40% improvement in performance compared to the Ryzen 7040 series when running AI chatbot Llama 2 and image recognition models like ResNet 50 and Inception V4. The Ryzen 8040 achieves 39 Tera Operations per Second (TOPS) for AI processing, surpassing the Ryzen 7040's 33 TOPS. In addition to AI capabilities, the Ryzen 8040 outperforms Intel's 13th generation (Raptor Lake) laptop processors in gaming, Cinebench, and Geekbench tests due to its integrated RDNA 3 GPU. The Ryzen 8040 lineup consists of 9 models, with the Ryzen 3 8440U being the entry-level model and the Ryzen 8945HS as the flagship model. These processors are expected to power laptops starting from the first quarter of 2024, with Acer planning to use them in their Nitro V16 gaming laptop scheduled for release in March 2024. AMD has also announced another upcoming processor named "Strix Point," promising even higher AI processing performance than the Hawk Point (Ryzen 8040) with its XDNA 2 NPU. Intel is not lagging behind and will introduce its "Meteor Lake" processor series this month, emphasizing AI capabilities.
