The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Driving Indonesia's Digital Economy
The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to boost Indonesia's digital economy by up to USD 366 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp 5,820 trillion in the future. The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Mira Tayyiba, has revealed that Indonesia has a tech-savvy younger population. In line with this, Indonesia's digital economy has been experiencing significant growth.
"Indonesia's digital economy has surged from USD 41 billion in 2019 to USD 77 billion in 2022," as stated by Mira in Jakarta on Tuesday (31/10/2023).
To propel the growth of Indonesia's digital economy, the government has taken strategic actions, including investments in digital infrastructure development, enhancing digital literacy among the population, and harnessing emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence. According to a Kearney report, the utilization of AI is projected to make a substantial contribution to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"The deployment of AI is projected to contribute USD 366 billion to Indonesia's GDP in 2023," says Mira.
Indonesia is currently entering an era increasingly dominated by digital and emerging technologies. The Indonesian government has formulated the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2020-2045 to anticipate these developments. This document emphasizes the importance of ethical AI development and transparent, accountable, and fair AI-related policies.
"AI systems must be designed to be transparent in decision-making, accountable in their actions, and fair in their treatment of various societal groups," states Mira.
"Indonesia is committed to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and digital governance to drive inclusive, empowering, and sustainable digital growth. International cooperation is also considered crucial in achieving these goals."
