Samsung's Ambitious Plans to Compete with Apple in the Premium Smartphone Market
Samsung has set ambitious targets for 2024. The South Korean smartphone vendor aims to sell more flagship phones with premium prices to challenge Apple's dominance in the premium smartphone market. One strategy they plan to employ is increasing the average selling price (ASP) of their products.
Reports from The Korea Daily indicate that Samsung intends to regain its position in the premium smartphone market, which has long been dominated by Apple. Currently, more than 75% of Samsung's global phone sales consist of low-cost variants. Analysts report that the ASP for Samsung phones is $295, whereas Apple's phones have an ASP of $988.
To narrow this gap, Samsung plans to sell more high-end phones and aims to have more Galaxy flagship phones listed among the top 10 best-selling phones worldwide. According to Omdia's list of the top 10 best-selling phones in the first half of 2023, the top four positions were occupied by iPhones. The Galaxy S23 Ultra, on the other hand, ranked sixth, and four other Samsung phones on the list were mid-range devices.
The Korea Daily's report also reveals Samsung's plans for the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, set to be released early next year. Samsung is said to have set a target to sell 35 million units of the Galaxy S24 series next year, which is 10% higher than the 31 million units of the Galaxy S23 series sold. Overall, Samsung hopes to sell 253 million phone units next year, including the Galaxy S24 series, as reported by SamMobile on Monday, November 6, 2023.
Sources from The Korea Daily suggest that Samsung's shipment figures may fluctuate depending on market conditions. Analysts estimate that both Apple and Samsung's annual shipments fall in the range of 250 million units, but some analysts predict that Apple may surpass Samsung's shipments next year.
Rumors have it that the Galaxy S24 series will be Samsung's first phone to feature generative AI. Samsung is reported to have collaborated with Google and Microsoft to introduce chatbot Bard or ChatGPT to its phones.
