Vivo's BlueOS: A New Operating System for Smartwatches
Smartphone manufacturer Vivo has developed its own operating system (OS) called BlueOS. This mobile OS was announced during the Vivo Developer Conference 2023 and is designed exclusively for smartwatch devices.
BlueOS is Vivo's in-house operating system, created to transform the way users interact with their devices. It has been in development since 2018 to address the limitations of the Android app ecosystem.
What sets BlueOS apart is that it doesn't rely on the Android operating system, yet it claims to support several popular Android applications in China, including Alipay, Baidu Maps, and Himalaya.
An intriguing feature of BlueOS is its use of the Rust programming language. Rust is well-regarded among developers for its emphasis on security, performance, and productivity. BlueOS is the world's first operating system to incorporate Rust programming.
BlueOS focuses on three main features: smart interactions, a smoother user experience, and data security. It supports a wide range of inputs, from images, text, videos, gestures, sign language, to brainwave recognition.
This opens up exciting opportunities for developers to create applications for BlueOS. Users can also personalize wallpapers and themes according to their preferences.
Another noteworthy feature of BlueOS is the BlueXlink connection protocol, which utilizes a distributed design concept. This design ensures that BlueOS is compatible with standard protocols, enabling seamless data flow across different devices, whether at home, while traveling, or in the office.
BlueOS is also compatible with the fast app standard "hapjs," ensuring smooth transitions between applications.
In terms of performance, BlueOS claims to reduce memory usage by 67% and increase rendering efficiency by 48%.
Regarding security, Vivo asserts that BlueOS is less susceptible to vulnerabilities caused by improper memory usage.
Remarkably, BlueOS can run on a variety of devices, including those with as little as 32MB of RAM. This means it can be installed on a wide range of devices, from household appliances to wearables.
BlueOS will make its debut on the Vivo Watch 3 series, marking it as the first Vivo device to utilize BlueOS. Vivo envisions a new era of intelligent technology and limitless connectivity in fields such as health, entertainment, and productivity with the combination of BlueOS and smartwatches.
It's important to note that Vivo has not indicated any plans to install BlueOS on its smartphones. As of now, BlueOS is exclusively designed for smartwatches, while Vivo's smartphone lineup features two other operating systems: Funtouch OS and OriginOS.
