The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Driving Indonesia's Digital Economy
The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to boost Indonesia's digital economy to USD 366 billion or approximately Rp 5,820 trillion in the future. The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Mira Tayyiba, revealed that Indonesia has a tech-savvy young population. Consequently, Indonesia's digital economy has been experiencing significant growth.
"Indonesia's digital economy has surged from USD 41 billion in 2019 to USD 77 billion in 2022," stated Mira in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
To further drive the growth of Indonesia's digital economy, the government has taken strategic actions, including investments in digital infrastructure development, enhancing digital literacy among the population, and harnessing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. According to a report from Kearney, the utilization of artificial intelligence is projected to make a substantial contribution to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"The use of AI is projected to contribute USD 366 billion to Indonesia's GDP in 2023," said Mira.
Indonesia is entering an increasingly digital era marked by various emerging technologies. To address this, the Indonesian government has formulated the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2020-2045, emphasizing the importance of ethical AI development and transparent, accountable, and fair AI-related policies.
"This means that AI systems must be designed to be transparent in their decision-making processes, accountable for their actions, and fair in their treatment of various societal groups," stated Mira.
"Indonesia is committed to harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and digital governance to drive inclusive, empowering, and sustainable digital growth. We also recognize the significance of international cooperation and collaboration in achieving these goals."
