The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Indonesia's Digital Economy Growth
The utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to boost Indonesia's digital economy by up to USD 366 billion or approximately IDR 5.82 quadrillion in the future. Mira Tayyiba, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Information, pointed out that Indonesia has a tech-savvy young population, leading to significant growth in its digital economy.
"Indonesia's digital economy has surged from USD 41 billion in 2019 to USD 77 billion in 2022," stated Mira in Jakarta on Tuesday (10/31/2023).
To foster the growth of Indonesia's digital economy, the government has taken strategic actions, including investing in digital infrastructure development, enhancing digital literacy among the public, and harnessing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. According to a Kearney report, the use of artificial intelligence is expected to make a substantial contribution to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"The utilization of AI is projected to contribute USD 366 billion to Indonesia's GDP in 2023," Mira added.
Indonesia is entering an era dominated by digital and emerging technologies. The Indonesian government has laid out a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for the period 2020-2045 to anticipate these developments. This document emphasizes the importance of ethical AI development and transparent, accountable, and fair AI-related policies.
"AI systems should be designed to be transparent in decision-making, accountable for their actions, and fair in how they treat various segments of society," said Mira.
"Indonesia is committed to leveraging the power of artificial intelligence and digital governance to drive inclusive, empowering, and sustainable digital growth. International cooperation is also seen as crucial to achieving these goals."
