Atari Acquires Retro Game Studio Digital Eclipse
American gaming giant Atari has officially acquired the retro game studio, Digital Eclipse, based in the United States. The acquisition, valued at $20 million, was announced by Atari on their official blog.
In their announcement, Atari stated that this move will enable them to leverage Digital Eclipse's expertise and technology in the retro gaming industry. On the other hand, Digital Eclipse will have the opportunity to expand its business and capabilities by utilizing popular game titles created by Atari and other resources.
Furthermore, the presence of Digital Eclipse, along with another game company, Nightdive Studios, which Atari acquired in May 2023, will support Atari's future plans and strategies to profit from the retro gaming industry.
"The vision and mission of Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios align with what we are currently doing at Atari, and I can't wait to see what we can achieve in the future for the retro gaming category," said Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari.
CEO of Digital Eclipse, Andrew Ayre, added, "I am confident that this acquisition will excite our fans and look forward to the future developments in our business, capabilities, and products together with Atari."
For your information, Digital Eclipse is a game studio based in Emeryville, California, USA, founded in 1992. The company is known for creating software emulators for classic gaming consoles like Nintendo Game Boy Color, as well as developing new versions (remasters) and collections of classic games.
Some of the classic game collections released by Digital Eclipse include "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection," "Disney Classic Games: Aladdin and The Lion King," "SNK 40th Anniversary Collection," and many more.
On November 10, 2022, Digital Eclipse also released a collection of classic Atari games to celebrate Atari's 50th anniversary, titled "Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection." In the future, Digital Eclipse is expected to continue developing their retro game projects under the Atari brand, including a documentary collection project called "Gold Master Series."
